Memo 251: Four Tips To Werk The Athleisure Trend

Have you ever seen that meme that says “I either look like I’m going to a red carpet or like a homeless drug addict; there is no in between”?
That’s me about 67% of the time.
However, when you’re meeting up with one of your blogger baes, you want to show up a little bit. If you’ve been following me on Snapchat or Instagram Stories, you see that I “run into” Kéla of Kéla’s Kloset quite often. I actually think she follows me around but I don’t really mind it. She’s kute and fun or whatever. If you’re not following her blog and especially her Snapchat (kelawalker), you’re really missing out. She’s full of lively commentary, car karaoke, coworker/friend shenanigans and snap-by-snap NY moments.  Remember, it’s the Kéla Walker Show not the Walker Kéla Show!
The day that I met up with Kéla, comfort was key! We both wanted to take full advantage of the day in Williamsburg, Brooklyn without stressing out over what we were wearing. Athleisure was the perfect solution.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you’re ready to rock some athleisure of your own:
  1. Make a Statement: Go for the I-could-have-gone-to-the-gym-in-this-but-I-didn’t look by adding a statement making piece like the all-over sequins pants from Nasty Gal from my look and accessorize by adding a great pair of sunnies like Kéla and I both did in our looks.
  2. Transition from Performance to Street Wear: When you’re shopping for athletic pieces make sure that your pieces can easily transition from Soul Cycle to Sunday Brunch. All black pieces may be the easiest to coordinate but don’t be afraid to try different colors and textures like the knit jacket from Adidas Originals in my look.
  3. Put The Leisure In Athleisure: The best thing about this trend is being able to be cute and comfortable. Stay true to the trend by rocking track jackets, bra tops, leggings and sneakers from your favorite athletic brands. Kéla used the track jacket that was tied around her waist to take her look to a whole new sportier level.
  4. Remember To Keep It Cute!: Athleisure is no excuse to come out sloppy  too comfortable. Make sure that your pieces are clean and in good condition.
I’d love to hear what tips you’ve used and loved. Leave them in the comments below.
